NJ commercial auto,
answered straight.
The questions New Jersey business owners actually ask us — about what’s required, what it costs, and how it works. Don’t see yours? Call or start a quote.
The basics
Do I need commercial auto insurance in New Jersey?
Yes, if a vehicle is owned by your business or used regularly for business — hauling tools, making deliveries, visiting clients, carrying employees. A personal auto policy typically denies claims that happen during business use, even if the premium was paid in full.
What’s the difference between commercial and personal auto?
Commercial auto is built for business use and business-owned or business-titled vehicles, with higher available limits and coverages personal policies exclude. Personal auto is for personal, household driving and usually contains a business-use exclusion that voids commercial claims.
Can I put my work truck on my personal policy to save money?
It’s risky and often backfires. If the truck is titled to the business, carries a logo or equipment, or is used for work, your personal carrier can deny a claim — leaving you personally responsible for the loss. Commercial is the safe answer.
NJ rules & requirements
What are the minimum commercial auto liability limits in NJ?
For policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, New Jersey’s floor is 35/70/25 — $35,000 bodily injury per person, $70,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. That is a standard work vehicle. Commercial motor vehicles rated 10,001–26,000 lbs GVWR must carry a $300,000 combined single limit, and 26,001 lbs and up must carry $1.5 million. Most businesses carry far more than their floor, commonly a $1 million CSL.
Is PIP required on commercial vehicles in NJ?
Yes. New Jersey is a no-fault state and requires Personal Injury Protection on registered vehicles, including commercial ones. Commercial PIP attaches differently than personal auto PIP, which is one reason business vehicles belong on a commercial policy.
What is NJCAIP?
The New Jersey Commercial Automobile Insurance Plan is the state’s assigned-risk pool — a market of last resort for businesses that can’t get coverage in the standard market, often after non-renewals or rough loss history. We place businesses through CAIP and help move them back to the standard market when possible.
Cost & quotes
How much does commercial auto insurance cost in NJ?
It depends on vehicle type and count, how vehicles are used, driver records, garaging ZIP, prior losses, and coverage limits. A single contractor van with a clean record costs far less than an urban delivery fleet. We provide free, no-obligation quotes reflecting your actual operation.
How long does a quote take?
Once we have your vehicles, drivers, garaging, and use, a clean single-vehicle quote usually comes back within one business day across our A-rated carrier panel. New ventures and rough loss runs can take three to five days because more underwriters are involved.
How can I lower my premium?
Clean driver records and MVR screening, higher deductibles on physical damage, accurate radius and use filing, secured overnight parking in higher-theft areas, fleet rating once you reach five vehicles, and bundling coverages all help. We’ll show you which levers matter most for your situation.
Coverage questions
What coverages does a typical NJ commercial auto policy include?
Usually liability (required), PIP and medical payments (required), uninsured/underinsured motorist, and physical damage (collision and comprehensive). Many businesses add hired and non-owned auto, and auto shops add garage liability and garagekeepers.
Are the tools and equipment in my truck covered?
Not by commercial auto, which covers the vehicle itself. Tools and equipment need inland marine (contractor’s equipment) coverage, which we bundle alongside your auto policy so a theft or loss is actually covered.
What is hired and non-owned auto (HNOA)?
A liability extension that protects your business when employees drive their own vehicles for work, or when you rent or borrow vehicles. It’s inexpensive — often $150 to $400 a year — and closes a gap most owners don’t realize they have.
Certificates & claims
How fast can you issue a certificate of insurance?
Usually the same day, often within the hour during business hours. We can add a general contractor or client as additional insured and match the limits their contract requires. Fast certificates are one of the biggest reasons NJ contractors work with a local specialist.
Do you cover long-haul or interstate trucking?
No. We focus on New Jersey businesses that operate vehicles in-state without DOT/MC numbers or FMCSA filings — contractors, service businesses, local delivery, and fleets. Long-haul trucking is a specialized market better served by a trucking specialist.
Which areas of New Jersey do you serve?
All 21 counties. We’re based in Flemington in Hunterdon County and licensed statewide, writing everything from single work trucks to multi-vehicle fleets across New Jersey.
