For NJ auto businesses

Auto Service &
Garage Insurance NJ.

Repair shops, used-car dealers, body and collision centers, service stations, tire and lube. You sell, service, and move vehicles all day — many of them belonging to your customers. Standard commercial auto wasn’t built for that. Garage liability and garagekeepers were.

The automotive trade

Garage coverage is purpose-built for businesses where vehicles — yours, customers’, and inventory — move constantly:

  • Auto repair & mechanical shops
  • Body shops & collision centers
  • Used and new car dealers
  • Service stations with bays
  • Tire, muffler & quick-lube shops
  • Detailers and valet/parking operations

Why commercial auto isn’t enough

Standard commercial auto insures a fixed list of vehicles you own. Your shop’s reality is the opposite: a lot full of customer cars and inventory that changes daily, vehicles being test-driven and moved, and a premises full of the public. Garage liability is built for that churn, blending premises/operations and auto liability into one form.

The piece auto can never cover: damage to a customer’s car in your care. That’s garagekeepers — the partner policy almost every NJ shop needs alongside garage liability.

New Jersey requirements

NJ-licensed motor vehicle dealers face financial-responsibility and surety requirements through the Motor Vehicle Commission, and landlords and lenders often impose their own minimums. We line your garage liability limits, certificates, and any bonds up with what the MVC, your landlord, and your lender actually require — so your license and lease stay clean.

Size garagekeepers to your busiest night

Garagekeepers limits are set per location, anchored to the peak total value of customers’ vehicles on your premises at once — your fullest Friday before a holiday, not your average Tuesday. A limit set to the average leaves you short in exactly the catastrophe (a fire that takes the whole lot) that hurts most. We size to realistic peak exposure with a sensible deductible.

FAQ

Auto Service & Garages insurance, answered straight.

Why can’t I just use commercial auto for my repair shop?
Commercial auto insures a fixed schedule of vehicles you own. A shop has customer cars and inventory moving daily, test drives, lot moves, and public premises exposure. Garage liability is built for that, combining operations and auto liability in one form.
Does garage liability cover damage to my customers’ cars?
No. Garage liability and general liability both exclude damage to property in your care, custody, and control. Damage to a customer’s vehicle is covered by garagekeepers, which is why nearly every shop carries both policies together.
What’s the difference between legal-liability and direct garagekeepers?
Legal-liability pays only when your shop is legally at fault for the damage. Direct-primary pays for covered damage to the customer’s vehicle regardless of fault, up to your limit. We usually recommend direct primary so you can make customers whole without a fault dispute.
Are there special insurance rules for NJ dealers?
Yes. NJ-licensed dealers face financial-responsibility and surety requirements through the Motor Vehicle Commission, and landlords or lenders often add minimums. We align your limits, certificates, and any bonds with those requirements.
How high should my garagekeepers limit be?
Set it to the peak total value of customers’ vehicles on your lot at one time — your busiest night, not the average day — so a total-lot loss like a fire is fully covered.
