For NJ trades

Contractor Auto
Insurance in New Jersey.

Plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, roofers, GCs, carpenters, painters, landscapers. Your truck is the business — it hauls the tools, the crew, and the next job. We insure the trades that keep New Jersey running, and we do it every single day.

Every trade with a truck

If you bill for skilled work and drive to the job, we write you. Our NJ contractor book runs across:

  • Plumbing, heating & HVAC
  • Electrical and low-voltage
  • Roofing, siding & gutters
  • General contractors and remodelers
  • Carpentry, cabinetry & finish work
  • Painting and drywall
  • Landscaping, hardscape & tree work
  • Masonry, concrete & excavation

The trucks and vans of the trade

Contractor fleets are rarely uniform. We rate the mix you actually run:

  • Pickups (F-150 through F-350, Ram, Silverado) with and without ladder racks
  • Service vans — Transit, ProMaster, Sprinter, Express
  • Stake-body and utility trucks
  • Dump trucks under 26K GVW
  • Equipment and enclosed tool trailers

Where NJ contractors get burned

Three gaps show up over and over when we review a contractor’s existing policy:

Tools aren’t auto coverage. Your commercial auto policy covers the truck. The $14,000 of tools inside it after a break-in on a Newark job site? That’s an inland-marine (contractor’s equipment) claim — a separate coverage we’ll bundle so you’re not exposed.

The other two: personal-policy business-use exclusions that void claims, and missing hired & non-owned auto when an apprentice runs for parts in his own truck. We close all three.

Certificates of insurance, fast

In New Jersey contracting, the certificate of insurance (COI) is the price of admission. A GC won’t let you on the site without one, and they often demand a $1M combined single limit and additional-insured status. We issue COIs fast — usually same day — and we know how to add the GC as additional insured without drama. Slow certificates cost you jobs; that’s the whole reason local service matters here.

FAQ

Contractors insurance, answered straight.

Can I just insure my work truck on my personal auto policy?
Almost never safely. If the truck is titled to the business, carries a logo or equipment, or is used to haul tools and crew, your personal carrier will likely deny a business-use claim. NJ contractors need a commercial auto policy.
Are my tools covered by commercial auto insurance?
No. Commercial auto covers the vehicle, not the tools and equipment inside it. Tools are covered by inland marine (contractor’s equipment) coverage, which we bundle alongside your auto policy so a break-in or theft is actually covered.
My GC needs a certificate today. How fast can you issue one?
Usually the same day, often within the hour during business hours. We can add the general contractor as additional insured and match the limits their contract requires — commonly a $1 million combined single limit.
What does contractor auto insurance cost in NJ?
A single work truck with a clean driver and $1M limit typically runs in the four figures annually, varying by vehicle type, garaging ZIP, and use. Multi-truck operations get fleet rating. We shop multiple carriers to land the right number.
Do I need hired and non-owned auto if my employees have their own insurance?
Usually yes. Employees’ personal policies carry low limits and often exclude business use. When those limits run out after a work-related accident, the claimant sues your business. HNOA protects the company for a small premium.
